god of iced coffee

the glint in the eye of a piece

i don’t know how to describe this. not for lack of trying — i just think it’s one of those things that if you know, you know. and if you don’t, well.

but still. let me give it a shot

  1. in video editing i call it the beat. some video content, even film, just have.. the beat. i don’t mean the rhythmic musical kind. just a certain playfulness about when and where to cut a sequence into the next sequence
  2. in dance, it’s that face a dancer makes when they hit that one specific move. i can’t think of an example right now. something in the middle of satisfaction and pride. a slight and subtle distortion of the mouth, almost a smile, but not exactly
  3. in writing it’s something like intent. a hellbent insistence not to follow the conventions. like a run on sentence that should be grammatically wrong and disturbing but it works

there’s a bunch more examples i can think of but it’s that. i just dont think it’s something that can be put to words because it’s like something innate in people who make things. something beyond technical skill or ability, something that some people just know and have, and others just don’t.

i guess it’s something like playfulness, or mischief. something about the creator having fun in the process of creating it and it shows to the non-creators. like the quickest wink, or a finger to the lips

some people can be so good at what they do and be devoid of this. this something.

i wouldn’t say passion. i think passion is too abstract. and heavy. what i’m talking about is something light. something that most of the time isn’t the focus of a thing, but a nice little detail to notice. a little easter egg

i don’t even think easter egg is right because that demands a search or a hunt. what i’m trying to talk about is not something you look for — it’s just there or it isnt. and i don’t mean it in like a philosophical way. just literally, really.

it’s not a quirk, or a signature, or a tic

most people who have it dont even do it in everything they do, just the stuff that means something or is something

i really wish i could explain this better. i guess what i’m trying to say is that while not having it doesn’t mean the work is bad, having it just makes it so much more fun. and i don’t mind fun
